The CAN bus wire from the HU to the amp allows the HU to control the fader that's completely internal to the power amp when this is set up for a touring pack equipped bike with 4 speakers (2 in fairing, 2 in tour pack pods). When the bike gets a Boom! amp added to it, the factory installs a different flash to the HU which shuts off it's own internal power amps, and then sends line-level signals to the power amp. The total THD is at around 5% THD - which is pretty abysmal. The 6.5GT HU has an internal power amp that will power 25W/Chan to two channels. I don't see that there is a difference in the radios between CVO bikes and non-CVO bikes that come with the 6.5GT HU - with the exception of the modules, and amp(s) that are attached to it from the factory - which is where I see the only differences in the part numbers for the different bikes. The manuals don't indicate a part number for this amp - but it seems to be the only FAIRING amp that they put out anyway.Īll of this information is from the Boom! Audio manual that came with the bike. This part number includes the 6.5GT Head Unit (HU), the Communications module (CB, and intercom), the SXM module and one 4 channel, 75W/chan power amplifier. On the CVO RGU's, these do come with Part number 76000228. So here's a few of the things that I've found - if any of this isn't right, please lemme know.

My question is, if I remove the Boom! amp, and use an aftermarket amp off of the line-level signal coming from the HU, what functionality will I lose other than just the front/rear fader controls? Will I also lose the auto volume control? Just wondering what the risks are with yanking that Boom! amp outta there and using an aftermarket amp that's got a cleaner, non-compressed sound? I'm attaching a picture of the schematic below.

So, looking at the schematic for my bike, the radio only has two-channel output into the amplifier - which is where the signal is processed into four-channels by the amp via the two CAN-high and CAN-low wires going into both the amp and 6.5" GT head unit. I'm a musician, producer, and also Director of Operations for iHeartRadio - so my ears are pretty critical, and I know what I'm hearing. It compresses everything so badly, I can't stand it. I actually hate the sound of this system, though. I have a 2015 CVO RG Ultra, and I know that these bikes come from the factory with the Boom! amplifier rated at 75W/chan 4ohms.
